Others Shape Your Data, too - Privacy Is a Web Part I

Part I of a four-part series exploring how Privacy is a Web: I) Your Data Is Shaped By Others, II) Connected Data Is Predictive Power, III) When Others Affect your Privacy, IV) Why Privacy Works Better Together.

Diagram showing how personal data signals—like location, messages, and purchases—connect across people, apps, and devices to form a profile that reveals patterns and predicts behavior.

🔆 Your Data Is Shaped By Others

It’s not just your own choices that shape your data. Your information connects across a web of people, apps, and systems.

Everything you do creates small signals including where you go, who you talk to, what you search, what you buy and more.

Companies, apps, and platforms collect those signals and link them across devices, accounts, and even other people.

As those signals are combined, they don’t just sit in one place. They are used to build patterns that can reveal your routines, your relationships, your interests, and even predict what you might do next.

What makes this a web is that not every strand comes from you. Many threads come from the people and systems around you - shaping how you are profiled, predicted, and influenced.

💼 Briefing Room

This week’s question:

Who is contributing to your data besides you?

Our Privacy Brief explores how information about you is collected, connected, and shaped through everyday interactions and why it’s not as individual as it seems.

💛 The Key Takeaway:

Your digital footprint is shaped not just by what you do, but by what others do around you.

Read the Brief now. Read it later. It will be there when you’re ready.

🐾 One Paw at a Time

Have you ever noticed an ad appear shortly after you searched for something, visited a place, or interacted with an app? That’s not a coincidence. It’s the result of signals being connected across systems and sometimes across people.

We’ll explore ways to take control of this later in the Privacy Is a Web series.

🌈 On the H☀️rizon

Next week: We look at "How Your Data Interconnects Behind the Scenes" in Part II of Privacy is a Web. Small pieces of information from ourselves and others are combined into profiles that can be used to predict your behavior and shape what you see, experience, and are offered.
