Retailers tracking your every move in stores

🔆 The Unexpected Ways Your Location Is Tracked

A recent update to Target Corporation’s privacy policy revealed something most people wouldn’t expect.

Your location can be tracked in ways that have nothing to do with GPS.

Target's policy describes how its stores can detect your location using:

  • Bluetooth signals
  • your phone’s connection signals (like Wi-Fi networks)
  • even the LED lights above you

Many people think of location tracking as that little blue dot, but in reality, your location can be detected in many ways including when you walk into a store, as you move through different aisles, and where you are when you shop online.

Target’s privacy policy offers a glimpse into how modern retail works. Location tracking is not just about maps. It’s about understanding behavior. Multiple systems can track how you move and what you do both online and in-store.

Understanding how these systems work helps you decide where you want to set your privacy dial.

💼 Briefing Room

This week’s question:

How many different ways can your location be tracked?

Our Privacy Brief examines the different technologies used to follow you, explains how they work in everyday environments, and considers the impact.

💛 The Key Takeaway:

Location tracking is a combination of systems that can detect where you are often in ways you don’t see.

Read the Brief now. Read it later. It will be there when you’re ready.

🐾 One Paw at a Time

Take a look at your phone’s location settings.

🐾 Which apps have access?

🐾 Are they set to “Always,” or “While Using”? or "Never"?

Small settings like these help determine how often your location is shared.

💛🦴 Just a gentle reminder that the Stop the Snoop quest found on your Initiative Member dashboard will help you lock down the data flow from your digital devices - one simple mission at a time.
